Boston Red Sox: Rafael Devers better than Bryce Harper
By Sam Minton
It might seem like a crazy statement, but Boston Red Sox third basemen Rafael Devers is better than Bryce Harper.
One player for the Boston Red Sox who has quickly become a fan favorite is third basemen, Rafael Devers. The slugger has become a key member of Boston’s lineup.
Even at just 23 years old, Devers has proved that he is amazing at the plate. He has also increasingly improved his defensive skills at third base.
When you look at the numbers, it seems like Devers should be receiving more praise around the league. His numbers stand up against some of the best players in MLB.
So far in his career, Devers has a .282 batting average with 63 home runs and 211 RBIs. Pretty good numbers for such a young player.
One player who was hyped up from a very young age was Bryce Harper. He was projected to be a once in a lifetime player.
But when you look at the numbers you realize that Harper isn’t so unique and if you think he is one of the best players in baseball, Devers needs to be in that conversation as well.
The Red Sox have a real star on their hands. If this is what Devers is doing early on in his career imagine what he will be doing in a few years. He could be leading the way for the Red Sox.
Even at such a young age, he is getting MVP votes. If he continues to perform at a high level he will add a trophy or two to his collection before he is all set and done.
After this season Devers will be eligible for arbitration and he wouldn’t become an unrestricted free agent until 2024. Boston needs to be smart. They can’t lose a guy like Devers because they don’t want to break out the checkbook.
Even though it might seem like the Boston Red Sox are going through a rebuilding stage, they still have some top talent. With young players like Xander Bogaerts and Devers on the roster, Boston still has a bright future. It might just take a few seasons for Boston to get back to its former glory.
But it is hard to struggle when you have a player as good as Devers on your roster.
