Charles Clay a versatile tight end option for the New England Patriots.

After drafting two tight ends in the 2020 NFL Draft, expect Bill Belichick to still go after a veteran tight end similar to what he did in 2010 when he added Alge Crumpler to the tight end depth chart after drafting Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez.

One remaining free agent tight end who could come at a cheap price is Charles Clay, who is coming off a 2019 season with the Arizona Cardinals in which he racked up 18 receptions for 237 yards.

Those are not numbers that will get any New England Patriots fan excited, but those numbers are better than what any tight end put up for the team in 2019, including Matt LaCosse who would enter the 2020 NFL season as that veteran tight end.

With Jordan Reed also a possibility, the 30-year-old Clay makes more sense for the Patriots because they know him well.  He had his most productive seasons in the NFL playing in the AFC East for both the Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills.

Also, with an ability to also play fullback, a position he played the first two seasons of his NFL career, Clay’s versatility should also get Belichick’s attention.

He would also be a good weapon for Cam Newton as he is a intermediate target the Patriots new quarterback could utilize.
