The Boston College Eagles put up a valiant fight on Saturday afternoon against North Carolina but ultimately suffered their first loss of the 2020 season.

One can nearly imagine how raucous the crowd might have been at Alumni Stadium on Saturday as the Boston College Eagles were on the comeback trail.

And one can imagine the deafening silence as a hushed crowd saw the comeback fall just short.

A two-point conversion that would have tied the game with 45 seconds left was intercepted and returned for two points. An ensuing onside kick barely failed — only after a scrum — dashed the upset dream and the Eagles fell to the 12th-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels 26-22.

Boston College (2-1, 1-1), who had trailed all game, pulled to within two after Phil Jurkovec threw his second touchdown of the game, a six-yard strike to CJ Lewis. This came after two touchdowns were called back on that drive, scores negated by a pass interference by Lewis and a holding call on running back David Bailey.

The Eagles were aided by a pass interference call against the Tar Heels (2-0, 2-0) on a third and goal from the UNC 32, giving Boston College a first down. Five plays later, Jurkovec found Lewis for the score.

Despite the loss, the Eagles proved there should be plenty of good things on the horizon for the rest of this season and beyond. Here are three takeaways from Saturday’s game.
