New England Patriots: Interesting salary cap decisions await in 2021
Big decision ahead regarding Julian Edelman
Also, Patriots’ legend Julian Edelman will be 35 years old in May and he’s been injured some this season.
He’s $4M on the cap next season. The problem is when he’s on the field he’s amazing, tough as nails and he’s a future Patriots’ and just maybe Pro Football Hall of Farmer. Not an easy call, but he should stay.
Others on the list will be difficult and some are also sentimental calls, as well. Still others, not so much. The point of all this is that the New England Patriots will go into the 2021 offseason with money to spend. A lot of it. And there could be a lot more.
Much of it could go to a quarterback unless they decide to roll the dice in the draft, pick one early and ride with a kid. Alternatively, they can trade for an established quarterback or sign a lower-cost veteran free agent. Otherwise, signing a top guy like Newton will lighten that cap space in a hurry.
But options are there to build up cap space by making tough decisions on a few key, cap-heavy players and/or by releasing a bunch of less-than-productive players. Some of those are tough decisions and that’s why these teams have size-able personnel departments.
Whatever the outcome of these decisions, it’s going to be an interesting offseason for the New England Patriots. Very. Yet, aren’t they all? For some of us, they are indeed.
