Pete Mitchell

There is only one tight end who could claim this spot for the Boston College Eagles: Pete Mitchell.

Mitchell is not only the top tight end to play the game at Boston College, he’s also among the the greatest players to play at the college.

It was the 1993 season in which Mitchell became a true star for the Boston College Eagles. It was the same season they pulled off the big upset over Notre Dame, with Mitchell hauling in 13 receptions that game (a mark in which he’s tied with three others for single-game record).  The star tight end would go on to finish the ’93 season with 66 receptions, still the most ever by a tight end at the school and fifth-highest overall in a single season.

This total also led the Big East.

Mitchell wrapped up his career with 190 receptions, which is second all-time in Boston College history. His 2,388 receiving yards places him second and Mitchell’s 20 touchdowns have him tied for second.

An eight-year NFL career followed, with Mitchell playing in 114 games for three different teams and finishing with 279 receptions, 2,885 yards, and 15 touchdowns.

Mitchell was a two-time All-American, including a consensus pick after the 1994 season. His number 82 was retired in 2019 by Boston College and in the summer of 2020 was nominated as a finalist for the College Football Hall of Fame.
