New England Patriots wide receiver targets: Sammy Watkins

Free agent wide receiver Sammy Watkins is intriguing because of the talent.

As basically the fourth option in that explosive Kansas City Chiefs offense, Watkins is coming off a 2020 NFL season with 37 receptions for 421 yards and two touchdowns.

Not as productive as his early years as a member of the Buffalo Bills, but Watkins is just 27 years old and could put up bigger numbers on a team with less wide receiver options.

With Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry serving as a two-headed monster, Watkins could flourish with the New England Patriots as that outside possession receiver with big play ability similar to the production of Brandon Lloyd back in 2012.

In that season, Lloyd played alongside the tight end duo of Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez.  With slot receiver Wes Welker also in the mix, Lloyd benefitted from the matchup nightmare they presented.

Watkins could have a similar opportunity in New England with the trio of Smith, Henry and Julian Edelman.

Like Lloyd back in that 2012 season, a one-year deal for Watkins could benefit the New England Patriots offense and help Sammy Watkins re-establish his top receiver status.
