Boston Red Sox: 7 starting pitchers of interest at MLB Trade Deadline
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher MLB Trade Deadline targets: German Marquez
If the Chaim Bloom wants to dip back into that Colorado Rockies fire sale, he could get even more aggressive and go after a young pitcher the team could have long-term control of.
While 26-year-old starting pitcher German Marquez is a player the Rockies may want to hold on to, his team-friendly deal and effectiveness on the mound may be enough for Bloom to depart with a top prospect to obtain him if he feels righty will be an upgrade towards the top of the rotation.
In 20 games this season, Marquez is 8-7 with a 3.50 ERA, but has a 4-2 record with a 2.87 ERA in his last 7 starts. Although his value around the league is rising, Rockies manager Bud Black has made it known that Marquez is off limits.
During an appearance on MLB Network Radio on Sirius XM, Black splashed some water on the rumored smoke surrounding his 26-year-old pitcher.
"“He’s on a multi-year deal, so we have him a couple more years,” Black said during the appearance, via MLBtraderumors.com. “…He’s not going anywhere. Even though it might be out there – there might be some noise – we let our guys know, these guys aren’t going to be traded. That’s how our owner feels. That is how so many people in our organization who are the decision-makers feel about German – and a few other guys, too.”"
That may be how they feel, but if the right deal comes their way, a rebuilding team like the Rockies would have to entertain an opportunity to get better in the long run, although Marquez is a big part of that future.
To say this would be an aggressive move by the Red Sox is an understatement, but the type of move Bloom would make.
