Boston Red Sox Rumors: 3 Diamondbacks targets at MLB Trade Deadline
Boston Red Sox Trade Target No. 1: Ketel Marte
The Diamondbacks don’t have many players that qualify as stars, but it’s clear that Ketel Marte is their brightest one. Marte has developed into one of the more dynamic players in the game. The problem with him is staying on the field.
Marte’s breakout season came in 2019 when he hit .329 while smacking 32 home runs and driving in 92 runs. That was good for a fourth place finish in the NL MVP race, and it seemed like Marte was fully capable of being a five tool player.
Marte’s progress hit a snag in his last two seasons, primarily do to injuries. For reference, Marte is batting an absurd .370 right now, but he’s only played in 37 games so far. When Marte is on the field, he’s phenomenal, but staying healthy has been an issue.
To go along with Marte’s hitting prowess, he is a weapon in the field. He can play second base, shortstop, third base, and center field quite capably. Adding another utility type fielder into the fold would only add to the versatility that Boston has when creating their nightly matchups.
Only adding to Marte’s value is the fact that he’s just 27 years old, and is under team control for four more seasons for much cheaper than he should be. Marte wouldn’t just be a rental option, but offers the potential to be a pillar of whatever team he finds himself playing for.
Marte is currently rehabbing his way back from injury, which could make this a difficult deal to pull off. But Marte is one of the most unique options that could potentially be available, and if the Boston Red Sox have the option to acquire him, they should do what it takes to land the versatile young star.
