Boston Red Sox Low-risk moves at MLB Trade Deadline: Starling Marte

Kike Hernandez has been an absolute treasure this season at the plate and in the outfield, but if the Boston Red Sox want to fill that hole at center field, Miami Marlins outfielder Starling Marte is the man.

According to Sean McAdam of the Boston Sports Journal, the Red Sox have shown interest as well as the Philadelphia Phillies, New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants.

But, let’s forget about the competition and talk about how Marte would actually be the piece the Red Sox need to put them over the top.

Again, Hernandez has been doing his thing in the field and as a leadoff hitter, but he is not the player Marte is.  Batting .303 this season, Marte has the combination of speed and power the team once had in some guy named Mookie Betts, although the power is not at that level as far as numbers go.

Obtaining Marte may mean less playing time for Jarren Duran, but he’s young and the team don’t want to put too much pressure on their top prospect going down the stretch. This type of move would also allow the team to use Hernandez in different ways as he can play both the outfield and infield.  That is the reason the Red Sox signed him in the first place.

Marte, who is on the final year of his six-year, $31 million contract, will likely be a rental for the Red Sox, but with Duran waiting in the wings, this is a MLB Trade Deadline splash that would be worth the right combination of prospects, although Bloom wouldn’t want to give up too much.
