Boston College Eagles: Unknowns at tight end

The two previous starting tight ends for the Boston College Eagles, Tommy Sweeney and Hunter Long, have both ultimately found their way to the NFL.

Could Spencer Witter end up following that same path?

It’s too soon to tell for the redshirt sophomore but as the only returning tight end with game experience in 2020, Witter’s status could very well be on the rise.

Witter played in 10 games last season, making four starts. His role was primarily in the blocking category but Witter did manage to catch six passes for 68 yards. Nothing that will jump out, of course, but Long also began with humble beginnings as a blocker and occasional receiver.

There’s also graduate transfer Trae Barry to push Witter. Barry arrives from Jacksonville State, where he was selected as a FCS 2nd-team All-American.

It will be interesting to watch Witter, to see if he ultimately grows into the player that Sweeney and Long were before him. Given the offense, Witter will have his chance to shine to in 2021.

Outside of battling for time with Barry and others, Witter will also contend with a wide receiver unit flush with talent.
