Boston Celtics early NBA Trade Deadline targets: Joe Ingles

If Brad Stevens doesn’t shock the NBA world and get another superstar to Boston at the trade deadline, then look for the coach turned GM to add depth to the team in terms of scoring and playmaking off the bench.

Depending on the development and growth of Langford and Nesmith, Udoka and Stevens may not to mess around with their playing minutes, but depending on where the team is, adding another veteran scorer could be in play.  So how about Utah Jazz small forward Joe Ingles?

In averaging 12.1 points and 4.7 assists last season, the 33-year-old Ingles is only signed through 2022 with the Jazz after signing a $14 million contract extension.  That fits right into that $17.1 million exception.

The question is would Utah be willing to give up a player who has been monumental off their bench the last few seasons.  Well, that would also depend on where Donovan Mitchell and the Jazz are at that point in the season and what they would need to make a deep run in the playoffs.  While it is hard to imagine Utah wanting to move Ingles at the trade deadline, if there is a move out there that would solidify them as a contender in 2021-22, you can’t rule anything out.

In looking at Ingles, he would provide some scoring and energy off the bench.  The Australian shot 45.1 percent from three-point range in 2021, but it is his playmaking and energy defensively that would be a good fit off that Boston Celtics fit.

Again, it will depend on the development of the younger players, particularly Nesmith.  If there is no Year 2 leap there, the Celtics could look to add another wing who can score, which is something they were missing during the 2020 NBA season.  That lack of depth really showed when Jaylen Brown went down with a season-ending injury.

Above all, Ingles is a player who sparks energy.  Celtics fans would certainly love that.
