A 2-0 start to the season was exactly where the Boston College Eagles wanted to be heading into week three against the Temple Owls (1-1).

Doing so without starting quarterback Phil Jurkovec, not so much.

Backup quarterback Dennis Grosel will take the reins this week and the foreseeable future. Jurkovec had surgery on his injured right hand and the Boston College quarterback will likely be out for the remainder of the 2021 season.

For the third straight year, Grosel finds himself as the starting quarterback after the 1st-string quarterback suffered an injury. One thing we’ve learned in this time is that with the redshirt senior, a significant drop in play is not to be expected.

Boston College Eagles in capable hands

Grosel brings plenty of experience to the table and it’s definitely nice to have a seasoned player in the team’s back pocket to step up as needed.

In limited action in Boston College’s victory over Colgate and playing much of last Saturday’s win against UMass, Grosel has been impressive. He is 16-20 on the year, with 243 yards and one touchdown pass.

Grosel also has six carries for 27 yards and a score.

He’s come a long way since 2019. Grosel played in 13 games that season, starting seven. The team was much more run-oriented back then and Grosel wasn’t necessarily asked to do a lot. He passed for 983 yards and completed only 48 percent of his passes. Still, Grosel did throw nine touchdowns against only three interceptions.

In 2020, Grosel only appeared in three games, with 1 start. But that start was something to behold as he had a career-day. Grosel threw for 520 yards, a number that tied Doug Flutie for Boston College’s single-game record.

Given the full week to prepare as the starter prior to Saturday’s game, Grosel should be able to come out firing on all cylinders. Which should allow him to have a more-than-serviceable game against Temple.

Boston College Eagles: Plenty of help around Grosel

The Owls enter this game with Boston College allowing nearly 200 rushing yards per game. This should bode well for an Eagles team coming off one of its best rushing results in a while.

Pat Garwo III is coming off a gargantuan day and his fellow backfield mates will need to continue this trend. The less pressure on Grosel the better. Despite a lack of running attack on his record day in 2020, balanced production will serve Grosel and Boston College all the better in ’21.

It also helps Grosel has an outstanding offensive line in front of him and a deep, talented receiving corps around him. Zay Flowers and his fellow wide receivers were already poised to make a huge impact in 2021. Things have gotten even better in the first two games with the arrival of tight end Trae Barry.

Barry has six catches for 149 yards and two touchdowns.

Grosel is not quite the playmaker that Jurkovec is, but is talented in his own ways. He’s a smart player who can also make plays with his legs. Based off his passing abilities, there’s no need to think Boston College gets too conservative with the game plan as Grosel preps for the season ahead.

Losing Jurkovec is a bummer. No way to sugar coat that. But don’t despair. Grosel has the experience to lead the Boston College Eagles to big things this season. The season may not look quite as rosy as it did a week ago, but with Grosel leading the charge, Boston College will still make a lot of noise this season.
