New England Patriots rookie quarterback sticking his nose in plays

Speaking of Mac Jones, the Patriots rookie had another efficient day throwing the ball.

While Zack Wilson was throwing interceptions, Jones was keeping it safe as he went 22 of 30 in throwing for 186 yards.  Except for a nice screen pass to James White, another one of those nice drop-in-the-bucket passes to Jakobi Meyers and a down the seam pass to tight end Hunter Henry, there wasn’t too much to get excited about in the passing game and that is alright for now.

It’s obvious the training wheels are still on Jones and eventually Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels will let the rookie quarterback do more.  Until then, he will simply manage the game and do the little things on the field to help his team win.

On Sunday, not only did he go down and help Damien Harris into the end zone, but he threw a cut block on Jets linebacker that helped free wide receiver Kendrick Bourne on an end-around.

Those types of plays cause coaches and fans to hold their breath a bit, but it’s good to seeing the kid lay it all out to help his team win.  He does recognize that he doesn’t need to be involved in plays like pushing Harris into the end zone:

"“Yeah, I think we wanted to score, everybody was down there pushing, and my job is to make sure nothing bad happens and try to be by the ball, but maybe I should just stay back (laughs). At the end of the day, just trying to get the touchdown.”"
