New England Patriots defense rocks

With Christian Barmore taking the lead, the New England Patriots defense tightened up. Yet, it was still the offense that was carrying the Patriots’ water.

Trent Brown who was playing his first game since the first quarter of game one was at right tackle and played brilliantly. When he went out, and it was back to the offensive line of the previous month.

That’s pretty good, but Wynn can’t get the job done at left tackle. He had a huge penalty on a pass play to Hunter Henry when the Patriots had the ball down to the Browns’ five.

Instead, they were back at the 25. Wynn was a drive-destroyer as the Patriots had to settle for a field goal when they should have carried a 21-point lead into the locker room. It was 24-7.

The second half began with the Patriots on offense having deferred and kicked off to Cleveland to start the game. A sack of Jones on third down ended the first drive in a hurry.

One thing is clear, when Gunner Olszewski is out, the Patriots don’t have anyone evidently who can return a punt. And it cost them yards against Cleveland. Where’s J.J. Taylor there?

Didn’t matter. Jones aided by once again by Brandon Bolden, a dominating offensive line, and a second touchdown by Stevenson brought the score to 31-7.

Now, most understandably fans don’t watch offensive line play very much for obvious reasons. It ain’t exciting, They’re not scoring touchdowns or catching long passes. None of that.

Yet, those great things aren’t happening if the O-line isn’t producing. Anyone who doesn’t think Trent Brown is a difference-maker, think again. He’s simply dominant.

Brown was out for the second quarter but when he returned in the third, the offense was even more dominating. he should be re-signed for a long-term deal after the season if he’s healthy.

New England Patriots close out the Browns in the fourth quarter

The New England Patriots had an easy objective going into the fourth quarter leading the Browns 31-7, just don’t make any big mistakes.

Late in the third quarter, after a silly roughing the passer penalty against Dietrich Wise Jr., Matt Judon flattened Baker Mayfield and he went out. On the next play, more of the same.

Patriots sack artist Judon sacked Case Keenum and racked up his 10th sack in 10 games. What a player. That was followed by a sack by Kyle Van Noy who also had a forced fumble. Nice game.

The Patriots took over and it was just a matter of grinding down the clock and the Browns defense, even more, to seal the deal and raise their record to 6-4 with a four-game winning streak to boot.

But the Patriots kept up the pressure and scored two more touchdowns. Major kudos have to go to several Patriots players.

First, on offense. Start with the sensational rookie quarterback, Mac Jones. He lit up a very good Cleveland defense, no slouches there. Mac was back to his decisive, accurate self.

Jones on the day was 19 of 23 with three touchdowns and 198 yards and no interceptions. That’s an 82.6 percent completion percentage. Right. Nothing more to say there. At all. Uncanny.

Helping out was the newly re-installed tackle, Trent Brown. He’s a force, folks. From a nondescript position, he dominates. You’re just not going to get around him often if at all.

If Bill Belichick and his staff ever come to their senses and play Brown at left tackle and Onwenu at right, this team can go anywhere.

Jones threw his third touchdown to Hunter Henry after a drop of a likely TD by Stevenson. But the lead was extended to 38-7. And got a final TD to run the score to 45-7.

And as for a favorite in this space from the get-go (and a suggested pre-draft pick here as well), Ram Stevenson, well, he broke out with 100 yards on 20 carries and two touchdowns.

That’s a breakout game for the great young rookie. And, it’s just the beginning. He’ll be a major factor if healthy the rest of the season.

So there are some quick takes on the blowout win over a very good Cleveland Browns team on Week 10.

It was a statement win against a good team that blew out the Cincinnati Bengals 41-16 last week in Cincinnati. And that statement is an emphatic one, the New England Patriots … are back.
