New England Patriots: Trent Brown is a great player and a great guy
New England Patriots offensive lineman Trent Brown is not only a great player, a dominating NFL tackle, but is also a great guy and should be a Patriot for years to come.
Anyone who saw Trent’s press conference the other day would have to come to that same conclusion. He spoke about his health situation last season and it was sobering.
An article in nfl.com quotes the big tackle commenting on his health scare last season,
"“To kind of come back and play against the Browns, I thought was pretty cool, because I almost died before we played them last year,” Brown said. “When I was laid out on the floor, I definitely thought about my kids. I even thought about retiring, honestly. It was that scary. I was about to be done with it. Then after it kind of settled down a bit, I was fine.”"
New England Patriots Trent Brown is a talented warrior
After suffering that scare, Brown still returned to play in three games for the Las Vegas Raiders. Yet, he said it took eight months for the big tackle to really feel right.
Coming back to play after that type of literally life-threatening situation shows the character and determination of the gargantuan tackle.
This space lauded the trade for Brown as an immensely important one for this reformulated new England Patriots squad after spending tens of millions of dollars in free agency to bolster a 7-9, 2020 team.
What his value would be to this team was never in doubt if anyone had witnessed his performance in 2018, the last Patriots Super Bowl season.
Brown was immense at left tackle protecting Tom Brady’s blindside. After that season, the Patriots inexplicably and ill-advisedly allowed Brown to leave to sign with the aforementioned Raiders. It was a huge mistake. They replaced him with Isaiah Wynn.
New England Patriots Trent Brown should be playing offensive left tackle
Wynn, a former first-round pick, is a talented but undersized player as a left tackle in the NFL and his deficiencies have been exploited by opposing defenses, much to the detriment of Mac Jones.
Trent Brown should be the New England Patriots left tackle beginning immediately. Michael Onwenu should revert to offensive right tackle where he excelled last season and the terrific Ted Karras should be at left guard.
That’s the Patriots’ best offensive line group and it should be that way going forward. Wynn is talented but too small to be effective on an island at left tackle without support.
The aircraft carrier-sized Trent Brown is not. He can overwhelm, engulf, or divert virtually any onrushing defensive lineman, and using him on the left side would be invaluable.
Unfortunately, the Patriots coaching staff persists in keeping Wynn at left tackle, even now when Brown is back in action. It’s a mistake and a critical sack(s) could derail this team that is in a tough fight to make the playoffs or even advance further.
It’s time for the New England Patriots to wake up and smell the coffee, as they say. If Trent Brown is now at full strength, he should assume the left tackle position with Onwenu at right tackle and play the very talented Ted Karras at left guard.
Wynn will be there to spell any of the four linemen except Andrews at the center, a spot at which Ted Karras is more than capable of filling in.
One other point needs to be made here. Trent Brown is only on a one-year contract with the New England Patriots. That needs to be rectified.
The Patriots and Bill Belichick mistakenly let Brown leave in free agency for Las Vegas after the 2018 Super Bowl-winning season. Hopefully, they have learned a lesson and won’t make the same mistake twice.
Trent Brown should be signed to a long-term contract with the Patriots, should play left tackle, and should be a staple in the Patriots’ offensive line going forward. We can only hope.
