Tom Brady helps New England Patriots take demand of AFC East
The NFL schedule makers knew exactly what they were doing when they scheduled the Buffalo Bills to play the New England Patriots and the Tom Brady led Tampa Bay Buccaneers on back-to-back weeks late in the 2021 NFL season.
They may not have predicted that the Patriots would be leading the AFC East, but the odds of the Bills having to take care of Bill Belichick and Brady on consecutive weeks to secure their status as a top team in the AFC were high, especially with the Pats expected to be at least competitive even with a rookie quarterback at the helm.
Well, Mac Jones and the Patriots have been more than competitive. Sitting home on a bye week on top of the AFC, the team and fans got to sit back and root for old friends Brady and Rob Gronkowski take care of the Bills late Sunday afternoon.
Tom Brady helps New England Patriots by taking care of Buffalo Bills
After the Buccaneers jumped out to a 24-3 lead, it looked like Josh Allen and the Bills were broken, but a torrid comeback not only gave Buffalo life in the game but gave them life in the division as well. But they were facing Tom Brady and in overtime, the GOAT delivered a 58-yard game-winning touchdown to Breshad Perriman to sink the Bills 33-27 and give the Patriots a two-game lead in the division.
With the loss, Buffalo is clinging to the final AFC wild-card spot while the New England Patriots gained even more command on the division. A win Saturday night against the Indianapolis Colts puts them in the drivers’ seat, while a loss and a Bills win in Week 15 would separate the teams by a game heading into a Week 16 showdown at Gillette Stadium.
In other words, the AFC East fight is not over just yet, but things are looking good for Belichick and his team all thanks to his former franchise quarterback.
Kansas City Chiefs look mighty, New England Patriots on a collision course with Patrick Mahomes
The Patriots may have a good hold on the AFC East now but watch out for the Kansas City Chiefs for the top spot in the AFC.
Like Belichick’s squad, the Chiefs are on a winning streak and doing it mainly with their defense. Chris Jones, Frank Clark and them boys are getting it done and it showed on Sunday with a 48-9 beatdown of the Las Vegas Raiders.
The scary part is Mahomes and the Chiefs’ offense looked as good as the defense. Mahomes threw for 258 yards and two touchdowns in the victory. Tied at 9-4 on top of the AFC, it looks like the road to the Super Bowl goes threw either Foxborough or Arrowhead, just like old times.
Elsewhere around the AFC, the Patriots did get some help from the Cleveland Browns, who downed the Baltimore Ravens 24-22 and the Tennessee Titans remained in the mix for the top spot with a 20-0 shutout victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars.
It looks like the AFC playoff race is going to come down to the final week of the season. With how things are going, it might come down to the final seconds for the final wild card spot and to decide division champions. It’s going to be wild.
