No. 6: Jonnu Smith can still make a huge impact for the New England Patriots

Another offensive player who needs to pick up some momentum down in Miami is New England Patriots tight end Jonnu Smith.

As one of the splash free agent signings entering the season, Smith has been a bit of a disappointment as far as production goes.  He could be one of those players where it just takes some time to gel in the Patriots’ offense, so before calling him a bust, we must see what he does in the playoffs.

With just 28 receptions for 294 years and a touchdown heading into this Week 18 matchup, the breakout game for Jonnu Smith is still something Patriots fans are waiting for. As a versatile tight end with speed, size and power, if he can become another target for Mac Jones, the Patriots’ offense will become hard to defend, especially with the power running game going.

Now, the team has found a way to etch Hunter Henry into the flow of the offense, the goal for Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is find ways to get Jonnu Smith the ball, particularly in open space and in red zone situations.  Whether that is handing him off the ball or setting up screen plays for him, this game vs the Dolphins is a perfect opportunity to get the man some confidence in the offense by getting him involved.

Sometimes it only takes one big play to get a talented player going.  If they can find a niche for Smith heading into the playoffs, there is still a chance he can make a great impact in his first year with the Patriots.
