Boston Celtics finally pull off a Jayson Tatum for Anthony Davis blockbuster

If the Boston Celtics wouldn’t trade Jayson Tatum or Jaylen Brown back when Anthony Davis was forcing his way out of New Orleans, why in the world would they now?

Well for one Davis was near the end of his contract and then president of basketball operations Danny Ainge wasn’t giving up Tatum or Brown for a rental as Davis made it clear he had his sights on Hollywood or any other city not named Boston.

Now an NBA champion and a couple of seasons playing alongside LeBron James, there are some rumblings that the Lakers could chose to move on from Davis or at least listen to offers.

NBA insider Marc Stein dropped this little nugget per via Hoopshype:

"“They had the six worst seasons in franchise history before they got LeBron and who knows? It could be equally bumpy when the LeBron-AD era is over. I think that’s why you’ve kind of started hearing and it’s all very speculative… I want to stress that I have not heard anything to this effect. But you do start to hear that. People are asking the question, ‘Will they trade AD before his contract runs out so they don’t end up on that position?'”"

Still a top-five talent (averaging 23.3 points and 9.9 rebounds this season), the Celtics would certainly give an Anthony Davis trade some serious thought if the asking price was a package centered around Tatum.  Finally, they would get a dominant big man who could have the same sort of impact on the franchise that Kevin Garnett had back in 2008…if he bought in.

With championship experience under his belt, teaming Davis with Jaylen Brown and perhaps a prize free agent signing could mark for a new Big-3 era in Boston no one seen coming.  Again, Davis would have to buy into the idea of being a Celtic and bleeding green the same way Garnett did.

As for Tatum, playing for the Lakers would give him the opportunity to not only play with LeBron James, but follow the footsteps of his childhood idle Kobe Bryant.  As nauseating as it would be for Celtics fans to see Tatum excel in the purple and gold, this potential blockbuster would add another chapter to the historic rivalry within itself would shock the NBA world.
