Boston Celtics swap Jayson Tatum for Zion Williamson

If the New Orleans Pelicans were shopping star power forward Zion Williamson and the asking price was Jayson Tatum, would you do it if you were Boston Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens?

The first question is why the Pelicans would even think about moving on from Williamson.  The answer to that is exactly what happened with Anthony Davis.  It may and possibly will get to the point where Williamson forces his way out of New Orleans.

While the New York Knicks would appear to be at the top of his wish list if such a situation occurred, Boston is a big market destination where the young, emerging superstar could flourish, but there would be a risk.  Though talented, the size of Williamson (6-foot-6, 317 pounds) has already made him an injury-prone liability.

But, still, he is a force of nature who can score from anywhere on the court.  He also makes the players around him better with his toughness and playmaking skills on both sides of the court.  He is a little younger and is a game-changer on both ends of the court as is Tatum when he is engaged, and his shots are falling.

Again, a major risk given Williamson’s injury history during his brief time in the NBA, but the young star is a player worth monitoring in case things eventually go sour with Tatum and his happiness in Boston.  It’s not a trade worth considering this season, but moving forward, both young superstars may seek and need a change of scenery.

In conclusion, a swap of the former Duke stars would certainly shake things up as far as the Celtics go but would also send shivers throughout the NBA…to say the least.
