Could another top wide receiver be making his way to the AFC East?  Will Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots have a chance to make up for their 2018 NFL Draft first-round bust?  Will the Seattle Seahawks trade DK Metcalf?

The answers to those questions will lead to the next great blockbuster in the NFL this offseason. If Belichick and the Patriots are the team to make the splash, it would put a Patriots team that just traded for DeVante Parker suddenly back in the arms race that is the AFC.

At this point, it is just buzz, but as NFL fans saw with the Tyreek Hill trade that came out of nowhere, money talks in the league and with Metcalf on the last year of his rookie deal, money could lead him out of the Emerald City.

New England Patriots, NFL teams monitoring the availability of DK Metcalf

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, who initially reported that Metcalf could be available “at the right price,” Seattle would like to keep their star wide receiver, but as he reported on Sunday, the smoke is certainly there.

"“This is a name that’s buzzing in league circles.  No guarantee that anything happens here,” Fowler said Sunday, as transcribed by CBS Sports.  “I’m told that Metcalf has gotten indications, informally from the team, that he’s not going to be traded.  Seattle has said publicly they have no intention to trade him.“But the execs I talk to keep bringing him up that maybe they would either be willing to move on at the right price or that Metcalf would welcome a change.  So, something is going on here; it’s just hard to figure out what.  But he’s got one year left on his rookie deal.  He would need a new contract as part of a trade.  That’s the tricky part.”"

That is exactly the tricky part for the New England Patriots who would have to outbid a team like their AFC East rivals, the New York Jets who were in on Hill and ready to pounce on the next star receiver that becomes available.  Is that player DK Metcalf?

With rumors also swirling around Tennessee Titans wide receiver AJ Brown, wide receiver hungry teams like the Jets, Patriots, Baltimore Ravens, and Green Bay Packers will be the first teams rumored in the mix.

DK Metcalf would be a beast in a New England Patriots uniform

But, obviously, let’s fantasize about Metcalf catching passes from Mac Jones.

First, Belichick would likely have to trade this year’s first and a future high-round pick just to get in competitive conversations if the 6-foot-4, 235-pound receiver became available.  They could also toss back N’Keal Harry and another younger player to entice the Seahawks, a team on the rebuild after trading Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos.

As far as the contract, the New England Patriots will have a ton of cap space next season and could work out an extension for the 24-year-old Metcalf that will backload that contract.  So, don’t count Belichick out when it comes to cap space this season.

When it comes to on the field, the addition of Metcalf would give Jones that big target that the team hoped they had with Harry.  In his first three seasons in the NFL, this man has 216 receptions for 3,170 yards and 29 touchdowns.  Add him to the mix of Parker, Kendrick Bourne, Jakobi Meyers, Nelson Agholor, Hunter Henry, Jonnu Smith and a trio of pass-catching running backs and that Patriots offense is suddenly one to be reckoned with in the AFC.

Of course, this is wishful thinking if you are a Patriots fan because historically they don’t outbid teams, but you never know when it comes to Bill Belichick and maybe Pete Carroll is willing to toss his former team a nugget…at the right price.
