The Boston Celtics need to play like a team again

The biggest reason Boston lost last night is because their offense once again fell into their isolation heavy habits. For most of the fourth quarter, the Celtics sat at the perimeter and settled for low percentage shots before complaining to the refs. It was an absolutely disgusting approach.

For starters, the C’s were in the bonus within four minutes of the quarter starting. They proceeded to stop attacking the rim entirely and just fire up contested jumpers for most of the quarter. They got comfortable, despite the fact there was a ton of time left and Milwaukee began scoring on pretty much every trip down the floor, and it cost them.

When the Celtics move the ball around, they score effortlessly against the Bucks. The first half in Game 2 was a brief taste of what the offense could look like when firing on all cylinders. Sure, they hit an unsustainably high number of their threes, but the general thought is that when you pass the ball, shots will open up for you.

For most of the night, Boston did what they needed to do to win this game, but they fell back into their old habits that have plagued them for so long before their second half turnaround. They were supposed to be beyond these crunch time woes, but they have popped up again at the worst possible time. They crumbled under pressure, and now their season is on the verge of ending sooner than initially expected.

But now, the pressure is all on Milwaukee to win this thing in Game 6, because if Boston forces a Game 7, the series comes back to Boston. If they can get Williams back in the fold, their biggest issue from the end of last night’s loss will almost immediately be fixed.

While staheads and analytic freaks will scamper to tell you this series is over, it isn’t. If the Boston Celtics can force a Game 7, it’s anyone’s series. But it’s time for one final counterpunch first. The Celtics have overcome so much this season, and you can bet this isn’t going to stop them from going out and giving it their all in Game 6.
