As one of the few free agent signings in the offseason, versatile running back Ty Montgomery will either be a key addition to the New England Patriots offense or won’t even make the team.

After spending his first seven NFL seasons with the Green Bay Packers, Baltimore Ravens, New York Jets and New Orleans Saints, the 29-year-old Montgomery does come to the Patriots with a lot of experience and productive experience.

Most of all, it is his versatility as a playmaker that makes him an interesting fit in New England.  Those are the kind of players Bill Belichick usually hits on in free agency.

Ty Montgomery brings more versatility to New England Patriots offense

Referencing the “culture” of the Patriots, Montgomery noted in his Zoom call with the media this week, that his admiration of the organization both through what he has seen and heard is the reason he signed with the team.

"“You hear a lot, you see a lot.  You can see the culture from the outside looking in,” Montgomery said, as transcribed by WEEI.  “I’ve had teammates on other teams that have come from New England, and they always spoke very highly.  I wanted to be a part of this.  I wanted to be a part of a team that’s coached by Coach Belichick.  I wanted to be a part of a team just with the group of guys that’s here.  I just felt like being a New England Patriots is going to make me a better football player.”"

The question is can Montgomery even make a football team that is well stacked at both positions he can play.

So, the question is, what is Ty Montgomery’s fit with the Patriots?

Will he be the backup for White as the third down passing back?  If so, he would have to out-duel J.J. Taylor and Pierre Strong for the role.

Will he be the team’s primary punt or kickoff returner?  That is probably more of a realistic spot for Montgomery who has shown he can line up at the wide receiver position and be productive, but again, there is a lot of competition there.  Whatever plans the New England Patriots have for Montgomery, he is willing to do whatever the team needs.

"“I consider myself an employee of the New England Patriots.  And whatever they ask of me is what I’m going to do,” Montgomery said.  “I’m employee No. 14 of the New England Patriots and I’ll be doing whatever is asked of me.”"
