Boston Red Sox: 3 unexpected contributors to the team’s winning stretch
Boston Red Sox unexpected contributor No. 1: John Schreiber
In a bullpen full of struggling pitchers, John Schreiber has been a standout performer. It’s kind of funny that a guy who didn’t even start the season in the majors, and wasn’t even on the team’s 40-man roster a month ago, has become the team’s most consistent reliever.
After bouncing around the majors and minors for most of his career, Schrieber has finally found a home in Boston’s bullpen for the time being. He has a 1.42 ERA over 12 appearences, and he only recently gave up his first pair of runs in an outing against the Baltimore Orioles. Aside from that, he’s been phenomenal.
It’s not as if Schreiber has been pitching in games that aren’t close either; most of his outings have come between the sixth and eighth innings of games that are still in the balance. Over the course of May, Schreiber has picked up two wins, four holds, and his first MLB save.
Schreiber’s unique submarine style of delivery has thrown off hitters for most of May, and the longer he can keep this up, the better. Boston needs as much bullpen help as they can get, and Schreiber has stepped up from out of nowhere to become one of the team’s most trusted arms late in games. If they can get more guys in the pen to step up like him, the Sox could actually make some noise later on this season.
