New England Patriots player with most to prove No. 2: Nelson Agholor

Nelson Agholor was signed to a two-year deal last offseason with the intention for him to be New England’s top wide receiver. That’s not how things panned out, and now Agholor finds himself on the outside of the Patriots wide receiver corps looking in.

Agholor was thoroughly outplayed by Jakobi Meyers and Kendrick Bourne last season, meaning at best heading into this season he would be the team’s third option at wideout. But New England swung a deal for Devante Parker, and used a second-round pick on Tyquan Thornton. Depending on how good Parker and Thornton do during training camp, there may not be a spot for Agholor on the roster.

It’s up to Agholor to prove that there is indeed room for him on the roster. He’s got a lot of solid traits at wide receiver, but he rarely put it all together last season. He profiles as more of a deep ball threat, but he wasn’t getting enough seperation to get the ball most of the time. That’s why Parker and Thornton are on this team.

Agholor could very well get cut or traded before the season starts, as he is getting paid too much to be an insurance policy incase Parker gets injured (which has happened a lot throughout his career). If Agholor cannot prove he’s worth a spot on the roster before the season starts, it wouldn’t be surprising if the 2021 season was his only season in Foxborough.
