New England Patriots free agent target No. 1: Trey Flowers
Immediately after Trey Flowers was released by the Detroit Lions, it seemed like he would make a perfect fit with the Patriots. With most of their free agent and draft work done now, Flowers’ fit makes even more sense now.
New England needed some help on their defensive line heading into the offseason, and they have made virtually no moves to address a pretty substantial area of need. They are clearly hoping some of their unproven recent draft picks will pan out, but that’s risky business.
Adding a proven veteran such as Flowers who has experience in New England’s system seemed like a no-brainer at the time, and it’s remained confusing why the two sides haven’t connected at this point. Flowers could come in and form a dynamic one-two pass rush duo with Matthew Judon, and given how he flamed out towards the end of last season, it’s surprising the Pats haven’t really gotten Judon any help so far this offseason.
Flowers struggled during his three season stint with the Lions, which makes sense given how much of a mess the organization was during his time there. Flowers is a three-down lineman who can play against both the pass and rush with effectiveness, and that’s something Belichick values on the d-line.

Flowers has thrived playing in a complex defensive system such as New England’s that allows him to create havoc in a number of different ways. His playstyle is exactly what the Pats need on their defense right now. A reunion between the two sides makes tons of sense, and the New England Patriots would be wise to try to make it happen before the season starts.
