Boston Red Sox: 3 thoughts on a rivalry renewed vs New York Yankees
By Brian Foisy
This weekend’s series against the Yankees proved to be far more of a success than Boston Red Sox fans had anticipated heading into Game 1 Thursday night. And far more of a success than fans would have predicted after the end of an embarrassing Game 2 loss.
Splitting the series against that team, which has looked to be a shoe-in for a World Series appearance, is an amazing achievement. And the Red Sox two wins against the team, particularly their win in Game 4, may have exposed some cracks that other teams can look to exploit.

This column’s message ended up shifting from game to game.
In the beginning, I planned to write something about what the inevitability of this Yankee team kicking our butts for the rest of the season meant for the running score of the rivalry — something along the lines of whether a 2022 World Series win would overshadow Red Sox success from 2004 and on. And while a 28th title is still definitely a possibility, the situation seems a little less dire.
Regardless, it still seems important to take stock of where the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry stands nearing the halfway point of this season.
