3.  Mac Jones committed to taking his game to the next level

Let’s start with how Mac Jones isn’t satisfied with his rookie success.

After putting up the numbers that he did with limited weapons around him, Jones knows he had some things to work on beyond getting in better shape.  There were some plays he did leave out there on the field and he made mistakes that rookies are expected to make.

What made Jones stand out as a rookie was his maturity during those times.  He used those mistakes as teaching moments that will make him a more prepared and experienced quarterback entering his second season in the NFL.

But, without McDaniels or any competent offensive coordinator, there is a chance Jones can take a step back. There is also an opportunity for Mac Jones to really take control of the New England Patriots offense.  With a good, solid running back group, one of the top tight end tandems in the league and an underrated wide receiver group, Jones will have a more versatile group of skill players around him.

That should make him even better in 2022.  But it is really his approach that shows he’s a player who has bought in to the Bill Belichick way of taking each game, week, each season as a blank slate.  Coming off a Pro Bowl season, Jones is committed to taking his game to the next level.  He pretty much has to in order for the New England Patriots to have success this upcoming season.

"“It all goes back into just trying to be a better player and person.  That was my goal this offseason,” Jones told Perry.  “I feel better, I feel confident, and that’s what’s important.  I’m just gonna try and go in there and do my thing and lead everybody and help us come together as a unit.  That’s kind of what it’s all about, and the offseason’s a great time to sit back and relax a little bit but also try and make strides in where you want to make strides, so I feel like I’ve done that.”"

Although Mac Jones was more mobile than some would think, his toned-down body should improve his pocket presence and ability to make some things happen with his feet as well.  He doesn’t need to be Lamar Jackson or Patrick Mahomes in that aspect, but an ability to extend plays and keep defenses honest is an element of his game that will be even better in Year 2.
