The Boston Red Sox played in Houston Monday night and came away with a 3-2 win. But that wasn’t the biggest story coming out of Houston last night.

The biggest story came via a trade between the Red Sox and the Astros, involving catcher Christian Vázquez.

Vázquez, a part of the Boston Red Sox organization since 2008, was traded to the Houston Astros last night. In exchange, the Red Sox received infielder Emmanuel Valdez and outfielder Wilyer Abreu. Both are currently prospects in Double/Triple-A.

What Christian Vázquez meant to the Boston Red Sox

Vázquez was a guy that meant a ton to the Boston Red Sox organization. He was a guy that knew how to handle the pitchers in the organization, from top to bottom. Not to mention that Vázquez was becoming a solid two way catcher over the past few seasons.

Sure, when you talk about hitters, the first names you think of are Rafael Devers, JD Martinez, and others. But Vázquez’s offensive numbers were there, especially this current season. In 84 games this season, Christian Vázquez was hitting .282 with the Red Sox, along with eight home runs, 42 RBI’s, and a .759 OPS.

Plus, we can’t forget about the big moments with Vázquez in the playoffs. The walk-off homerun last year in game three of the ALDS against the Rays. Jumping into the arms of Chris Sale after winning the 2018 World Series.  Vázquez was huge for the Boston Red Sox in the playoffs and that will surely be missed.

What did the Boston Red Sox get for Christian Vázquez?

Like I mentioned before, the Boston Red Sox received two minor league prospects in exchange for the services of Vázquez. Emmanuel Valdez and Wilyer Abreu are both left-handed hitters and top 25 prospects in the Astros organization.

Valdez is a more attractive hitting prospect who has played multiple positions throughout his Minor League career. Abreu is an outfielder that can play all three positions, a plus defender, and has a big bat of his own. Both can make impacts at the Major League level with their bats down the line.

Is it great for right now with this Red Sox organization? Not necessarily. But could it be beneficial for the Red Sox in 2025 or 2026? Maybe!

It’s not what Red Sox fans want to hear at the current moment. But it’s the truth and we have to accept that reality.

The bottom line is that the Red Sox will miss Vázquez. It’s also very clear that the strong armed catcher will also miss being a part of the organization. This is a guy that asked to take one last round of batting practice as a member of the Boston Red Sox. How can you say anything bad about that?!

So best of luck to Christian Vázquez, a Red Sox fan favorite. Maybe we’ll get lucky and the Red Sox could pursue Vázquez again in free agency. But for now, he’ll have the chance to win another World Series title with the Astros. It’ll stink to see, but you can’t help but be happy for Vázquez, a guy that did everything right in his Red Sox tenure.
