New England Patriots: Nelson Agholor could be Belichick’s surprise cut
The New England Patriots have a very talented group at wide receiver/tight end.
Kendrick Bourne and Jakobi Meyers will look to make strides in their second seasons playing with Mac Jones. Jonnu Smith is looking for a bounce back season. Plus, the addition of DeVante Parker is also a huge help. But one name nobody is really talking about is Nelson Agholor.
With all of these talks about the wide receiving core, it looks as though Nelson Agholor gets a little lost in the shuffle. Could it be the New England Patriots could potentially cut the speedy wide receiver before the end of training camp?
The New England Patriots can replace Nelson Agholor with Tyquan Thornton
The good news is that Nelson Agholor is supposedly having a good start to training camp. However, the bad news is that Tyquan Thornton could be the replacement for Agholor in the long-term.
Agholor was brought to the Patriots in 2021 to be able to create separation with receivers. We saw flashes of that in 2021. However, Agholor’s biggest thing is that sometimes; he can drop some really easy passes. The inconsistencies of production cannot happen, especially in an offense that looks to be going in a different direction in 2022.
Also remember, Tyquan Thornton was one of the fastest prospects in the 2022 NFL Draft. The Patriots wanted to get younger and faster on both sides of the ball. Thornton can give you that on the offensive side of the ball. If he can catch up to the speed of the NFL game and create separation, then in theory; he could take Agholor’s role.
The New England Patriots have a moveable contract in Nelson Agholor
As he enters his age 29 season with the Patriots, Agholor is on the second year of his two year contract with the Patriots. Agholor is set to make nine million as a base salary this upcoming season. Who’s to say that Bill Belichick won’t look to get rid of that contract?

The only tricky part about this particular situation is the cap hit. If the Patriots were to get rid of Agholor, then they would take a 15 million dollar cap hit. That’s a bit of a tough pill to swallow. But we’re used to seeing Belichick finagle his way around these deals and save money for the Patriots. It wouldn’t surprise me if he did it again in Agholor’s case.
The bottom line is that personally, I don’t see a need for Agholor on the Patriots. They have other good receivers and tight ends that can help them improve in the offense. They want to get younger anyway. So why not cut the older bait now?
Nelson Agholor could be of use in another NFL offense. It doesn’t look like the Patriots will keep him past 2022 anyway. Why not cut him or maybe even attempt to trade him? You were able to get SOMETHING for N’Keal Harry.
I’m sure you can get even better value for Agholor.
