The Boston Red Sox have dealt with a lot in the 2022 season so far. Lately, it’s been the development and maturity of Jarren Duran. The trade deadline just passed by and Red Sox fans like myself are still questioning the future direction of this team.

Now? The news continued to get worse on Monday, regarding former Hall of Fame pitcher and current broadcaster Dennis Eckersley.

Dennis Eckersley will be retiring from broadcasting at the end of the 2022 season. Eckersley has spent almost 20 years in the broadcasting booth for the Red Sox. The long time Hall of Fame pitcher has spent nearly 50 years in the MLB, between playing and broadcasting.

Dennis Eckersley brought colorful analysis to Boston Red Sox games

One of the best things for a baseball fan is having somebody broadcasting that actually played the game. That is the element that Eckersley brought with him to broadcasting.

Look at all of the years he played in the MLB! He was with several different organizations in the Red Sox and Athletics, just to name a few off the top.

Eckersley was a guy that spent time as both a starter and a reliever at the MLB level. That is incredibly helpful to understand both sides of it. How does a starter go about their turn in the rotation? What is a reliever thinking throughout the course of the game?

Plus, you cannot forget about the interesting choice of words Eckersley had for baseball terms. “Cheeseball”, “go bridge”, “salad” and many other terms made Dennis Eckersley who he was as a broadcaster.

Especially after Don Orsillo left to go to San Diego, it helped having some light-heartedness in the broadcasting booth. Especially throughout the bad years in Boston!

My opinion on Dennis Eckersley retiring from Boston Red Sox broadcasting

I am extremely indifferent about Eckersley leaving the Boston Red Sox broadcasting booth. Truthfully, I’m not heartbroken over the announcement.

Listen, I totally get that some fans really like Eckersley. I can also understand the crowd that don’t like him at all. I’m truthfully right in the middle here.

I think Dennis Eckersley can bring that former player insight to a broadcast. He’s very good at analyzing the game itself.

The thing that drove me nuts personally were all of the terms that Eckersley would say in a broadcast. “Cheeseball”, “go bridge”, “salad”, etc., are not terms that I’ve ever heard in baseball and haven’t heard since.

But other than that, I think Eckersley did his job here.

The bottom line is that  Eckersley will be stepping away from the game of baseball all together. As a pitcher and a broadcaster, a lot of great memories were made thanks to him. So cheers to your retirement Dennis Eckersley! Whatever you decide to do in retirement, I hope it makes you extremely happy. Long live the best and worst moments of Eck that we saw. From the Kirk Gibson homerun to “It’s time to party!”, thank you for it all, Eck!
