Boston Red Sox: Chris Sale is one disaster after another
The Boston Red Sox continue to suffer gut punch after gut punch in the 2022 season. As if the trade deadline wasn’t bad enough! Fast forward a week later and they find out that their supposed ace is now officially out for the season.
Yep, you read that correctly Red Sox fans.
Boston Red Sox left-handed starting pitcher Chris Sale is now officially out for the rest of the 2022 season. This comes after Sale got hit with a line drive against the Yankees that broke his pinky finger.
Sale was throwing at Boston College and took his bike to grab some lunch. The lefty fireballer then fell off his bike and broke his right wrist, which required surgery.
The Boston Red Sox cannot rely on Chris Sale anymore
I am one of the biggest Chris Sale fans on the planet. But I’m also a realistic Boston Red Sox fan. We can’t rely on Sale being healthy anymore! Seriously, it’s getting to that point.
Think about the timeline that happened. Sale had Tommy John surgery during the 2020 COVID season. Makes sense? Then he misses most of 2021 before returning in August for the ALCS run.
Fast forward to 2022. He gets a freak rib injury that causes him to be out until July. Then he has a great comeback performance of five shutout innings against the Tampa Bay Rays. In his second start against the Yankees, he gets the line drive to the pinky finger. Now this.
It’s pretty clear. Sale just can’t stay healthy. We have to come to terms with it, accept it, and move onward. If Sale is healthy, great. If not, it can’t be heartbreaking anymore.
So what do the Boston Red Sox do with Chris Sale?
The Boston Red Sox are in a tough spot with the Cy Young caliber pitcher. He has two years left on his current deal. Let’s be honest, there probably won’t be a team that takes a flyer on Sale with his injury history.

Could the Red Sox trade him? Probably not. You’re also not going to DFA Sale because when he is fully healthy, he can be a big piece of your starting rotation. We saw that in the Rays start earlier this season.
So you’re probably going to end up keeping him and hoping for the best. Plus, reports said Sale should be ready for 2023 Spring Training. But I don’t think Red Sox fans are holding their breath anymore with that.
The bottom line with the Boston Red Sox and Chris Sale
This is just another domino to fall poorly for this Boston Red Sox team. I do believe Sale has a few good years left in the tank. But he has to be on the field to show everyone.
For Sale, it’s now all about 2023. Get this putrid season over with and do what you need to do. They need to extend Xander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers and then get some other good pieces in here. Let Sale be healthy for a change and try to get back to serious playoff contention in 2023.
