The New England Patriots have a unique hole to fill for the 2022 season.

Longtime captain and overall good guy James White was a great receiving back for the Patriots offense. But White has retired and now the question looms: who could be his replacement?

One name that has appeared often this preseason is utility guy Ty Montgomery. It looks like Montgomery has a lot of the same tools that White carried in his career. So this raises the question: is Ty Montgomery the perfect fit to replace James White? Let’s discuss.

Ty Montgomery can be Mac Jones “safety blanket” for the New England Patriots

One of the big things that James White did in his career was be a reliable option in the passing game for Tom Brady. That was also the plan for White in 2021 for Mac Jones, before he got a season ending hip injury in Week 3 against the New Orleans Saints.

So now with White officially retired, Montgomery can be that passing option on third downs for the Patriots. This could be especially be important with Mac Jones and the rest of the Patriots offense as they learn a new offensive scheme.

When there is a third and medium, a check down to Montgomery could do the trick of getting a first down to keep a crucial drive alive. Plus, Montgomery has the speed and quickness to break off tackles and gain more yards on a given play. So that all sounds pretty good to me!

Ty Montgomery can be a leader for the New England Patriots

Besides his ability to make plays in the passing game, James White was a vital leader in the Patriots locker room. This could be a role that the former Green Bay Packers running back can fill as well.

Any leadership by a veteran player is vital to a locker room in professional sports. Montgomery has been a part of four organizations now. He’s played with the Packers, Ravens, Jets, and Saints. So he has been around some good teams and some bad ones as well. That helps when you go to the Patriots!

Ty Montgomery is a guy that can help other young Patriots players in the offense. Not a bad thing considering this Patriots team can use all of the veteran leadership that they can get!

So is Ty Montgomery a perfect replacement for James White with the New England Patriots?

Simply put, yes! Ty Montgomery has all of the tools to be another version of James White both on and off the field. The opportunity to be the main receiving back? Yep. An opportunity to be a leader in this offense? Yep.

If Montgomery can give you some valuable experience on the field, that will only help the offense that much more. Give Mac Jones somebody to check down to when the pressure comes quickly and do a little bit on the special teams end as well.

It’ll be fun to see what Montgomery does in a Patriots uniform this season!
