As the 2022 season is coming to an end, it seems as though the Boston Red Sox will most likely miss the playoffs. Not only that, but they have a big question mark with the future of their star shortstop, Xander Bogaerts.

A lot of MLB teams will be pining for Bogaerts’ services in the off-season. One team in particular to keep an eye on is the Philadelphia Phillies. Remind me, who runs the Phillies again? Oh that’s right! That would be former Red Sox GM, now Phillies GM Dave Dombrowski.

So the question now looms: could the Boston Red Sox lose Xander Bogaerts to an old friend?

The Boston Red Sox have no contract solidified with Xander Bogaerts

This part is truly stunning to me. The fact that the Red Sox don’t have “the X-Man” locked up long term is alarming.

This is a guy that literally just won American League Player of the Week last week! He’s one of the best defensive shortstops in the entire league. Oh, and he’s currently leading the American League in batting average. So what are we even talking about here?

This could’ve all been avoided by getting this done in Spring Training, or during several different points in the actual regular season. Why the Red Sox are so willing to potentially let Bogaerts walk is beyond me!

The Boston Red Sox have big competition for Bogaerts in the Philadelphia Phillies

It’s not like the Red Sox will be the only major suitor for Xander Bogaerts this off-season. The Philadelphia Phillies are rumored to be heavily interested in pursuing the current Red Sox shortstop this off-season.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anybody that has seen Dave Dombrowski at work. We all know what he likes to do. He likes to go after proven veterans that can come right in and help a team.

Look at his time in Boston. He literally traded for Craig Kimbrel, Chris Sale, Steve Pearce, and Nathan Eovaldi. By the way, he also signed David Price and J.D. Martinez in his Red Sox tenure as well.

The point is that the Phillies will be aggressive considering the connection between Dombrowski and Bogaerts. Plus, the Phillies could desperately use a shortstop to help them compete in the National League East.

The bottom line with the Boston Red Sox and Xander Bogaerts

It’s very simple: the Red Sox are playing an extremely dangerous game with Xander Bogaerts not locked up long term. So no, it wouldn’t surprise me if “X” decided to pursue a bigger contract elsewhere.

Next. Red Sox need to continue hot September!. dark

The Red Sox better do what they need to do in order to keep Bogaerts in Boston for the foreseeable future. Don’t make any mistake about it, the Phillies will be very aggressive to get Bogaerts if they see a return to Boston not likely to happen. You’ve been playing hardball with the star shortstop this whole season.

End it and get him signed! Otherwise, a LOT of Red Sox fans will be extremely unhappy.
