A season with measured expectations for the Boston College Eagles has so far been less than.

Hopes initially were the Eagles would be entering the second set of four games at 3-1 or 2-2. Instead, with a tough opening-game loss and two disappointing ACC losses, Boston College sits at 1-3.

Battling injuries and inconsistent play has plagued Boston College in the early going. The Eagles return home this week with a winnable game against Louisville (2-2). The Cardinals did take Florida State to the brink, losing 35-31, so Boston College might need to be near-perfect performance to snag the ‘w’.

As sour as things have been, a handful of bright spots highlight the season’s first four games.

A dynamic receiver for Boston College Eagles

The primary playmaker and favorite target of quarterback Phil Jurkovec has been who everyone expected it to be.

Zay Flowers has held up his end of the bargain, with solid numbers through four games. Numbers that could be even higher if he wasn’t facing blanketed coverage and missed opportunities on a handful of deep passes this year.

This will be the fourth time Flowers has faced Louisville in his career, faring solidly each time. He’s totaled 14 catches for 202 yards against the Cardinals.

Flowers began the season with a bang, hauling in 10 passes for 117 yards and two touchdowns against Rutgers. He’s been a steady presence since, with the most recent performance a seven-catch game in the loss to Florida State (though only going for 45 yards).

On the season, Flowers has 29 receptions for 330 yards and three scores. Keeping up that pace could see Flowers ending up with 80+ receptions and over 900 yards. Of course, if he and Jurkovec rekindle their old rhythm and the offensive line improves, Flowers could push close to 1,000 receiving yards.

Helping his cause would be the rise of other receivers, as 34.1 percent of Jurkovec’s completions have gone to Flowers.

Tight end George Takacs has been the best of the rest, with 16 receptions. Still, he had 14 in two games and a total of two in the others. In keeping with a theme, finding the tight end more consistently will help Boston College’s efforts.

While the offense has struggled, the defense has been an improving unit.
