While the Boston Red Sox have a lot of questions about big name hitters going into this off-season, they also have a length decision to make about a crucial part of their rotation: Nathan Eovaldi.

Eovaldi enters the 2022 off-season as a free agent. If we’re being truthful here, a lot of teams will be vying for the services of Eovaldi.

If I were Chaim Bloom and talking to the Red Sox organization about off-season plans, I would re-sign Nathan Eovaldi for a variety of reasons.

Nathan Eovaldi’s stuff will help the Boston Red Sox

The front office should want Eovaldi based on his stuff alone. When he’s fully healthy and not on the injured list, Nasty Nate has some really good stuff in his pitching repertoire.

He has a fastball that can reach into the triple digits. When he spots it and doesn’t leave it middle-middle for major league hitters to tee off on, it’s one of the better pitches in baseball. The late velocity is a nightmare for hitters to try to time up when it’s on.

His curveball and split-finger fastball can be deadly knockout pitches. It’s a pitch that has gotten him out of a lot of jams in the past. Plus, don’t forget about his slider and cutter that come in handy.

Point being, Eovaldi’s pitches are really, REALLY good. The Red Sox need a veteran that has that type of stuff in the rotation. That’s why he had a really successful 2021 season, seen by many fans as the team’s ace at that time.

The Boston Red Sox need veteran pitchers like Nathan Eovaldi

When you look at the Red Sox rotation from last year, going into 2023; you have to wonder where the experience comes from.

Brayan Bello made only a few months worth of starts. While he improved every month, we don’t know what he can do throughout the entirety of an MLB season.

Nick Pivetta had a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde type of season. Some moments were really good and some were really bad.

We don’t know if Michael Wacha will pick up his option. We also don’t know if James Paxton will even be able to pitch in 2023 for the Red Sox, after missing all of 2022. Then of course, there’s Chris Sale; who has had his trouble staying healthy lately as well.

Where Eovaldi fits in is having a guy that can make 25-30 starts a year, has playoff experience, and can lead a staff. What more can you ask for?

The bottom line concerning Nathan Eovaldi with the Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox need to find a way to bring the right handed pitcher back to Boston.

The pitchers on the free agency market are nothing spectacular to look at and be excited about. Nathan Eovaldi will be one of the better pitchers on the market. Why go out and give another pitcher similar money that you can give to Nate? Bring him back on a two or three year deal and solidify at least one more rotation spot for the 2023 season!
