The Boston Celtics are looking good so far in the 2022-2023 season. An opening night win at home against the Philadelphia 76ers and an impressive road win against the Miami Heat have the Celtics at 2-0.

Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown are doing their thing. The other players are doing their part. But one player in particular that also stands out on this Celtics team is Malcolm Brogdon.

The Celtics traded for Brogdon in the off-season, seeing him as a valuable piece to the championship puzzle. After watching two games, I’m ready to say that Malcolm Brogdon is the missing piece to the Celtics championship puzzle.

Malcolm Brogdon brings a defensive mindset to the Boston Celtics

It’s no secret that the Boston Celtics pride themselves on defense. They were first in the NBA last season in just about every defensive category you can think of, thanks to a complete team effort. Bringing Malcolm Brogdon into the fold was a great fit.

“The President” brings a tough-minded personality to the Celtics. He sees how much this Celtics team loves to play defense. So it’s no surprise that Brogdon fits right in with the Celtics on this end of the floor.

Malcolm Brogdon brings bench scoring to the Boston Celtics

This is the biggest reason why I love Brogdon and what solidifies him as that missing championship piece. Malcolm Brogdon brings something that the Celtics lacked at times last season: significant bench scoring.

Let’s look back at the NBA Finals for a second. The Golden State Warriors had tons of options for bench scoring. The Celtics on the other hand…they just didn’t have the same firepower. Brogdon brings that newfound sense of bench scoring to Boston.

Look at the opening night win against the 76ers. “Uncle Malcolm” had 16 points for the Celtics, a sign of things to come this season for the Celtics. Sure, he only scored seven points Friday night against Miami. But everyone has their off games!

Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown are going to get their points every single night. But what happens when there’s a night when Tatum and Brown get into foul trouble? Who will take over the offensive burden?

This is where Malcolm Brogdon is so important. You might even see some situations when Brogdon is on the floor at the end of the game with the Celtics young star duo. That’s how special he can be for the Celtics, even off the bench.

The bottom line with Malcolm Brogdon and his role with the Boston Celtics

Here’s the bottom line with Brogdon: he’s the piece that the Celtics needed last season.

This is a guy that’s highly respected around the league and quite effective when he’s healthy. We’ve seen the scoring flashes the first two games.

I think Celtics fans are going to be thrilled that we got Malcolm Brogdon for Daniel Theis and a bunch of other role players. It’s early, but so far so good for the  Brogdon era with the Boston Celtics!
