There’s a lot going on with the Boston Red Sox during the MLB winter meetings.

Some fans have said that it’s a joke with the lack of signings they’ve been able to pull off so far this week. To be honest, it’s a fair assessment except for one part of the Red Sox: the bullpen.

The bullpen itself has had a few signings that have made it better.

Chris Martin was one name that the Red Sox secured for next year’s bullpen. Well, they were back at it today by signing former Dodgers and Braves closer Kenley Jansen.

The deal is for two years and $32 million.

Kenley Jansen gives the Boston Red Sox a legitimate closer

The last couple of seasons have been really stressful for Red Sox fans. Their bullpen didn’t have a true closer in it. Tanner Houck? I like him, but personally don’t think he’s the answer. Garrett Whitlock? He couldn’t pitch on back to back days for the Red Sox. John Schreiber? No. Matt Barnes? NOPE!

So Kenley Jansen coming onto this team for the next two seasons is a huge relief. No more will we have to worry about who is going to pitch the ninth for the Sox in a one or two run game.

Jansen has also been a big time performer in the postseason. He went with the Dodgers several times and delivered in big moments. Sure, he also contributed to helping the Red Sox win the World Series in 2018. But other than that, he’s been very dependable in the big moments.

Kenley Jansen gives the Boston Red Sox another good bullpen arm

One of the biggest weaknesses for the Boston Red Sox was their bullpen. There’s no ifs, ands, or buts about it. The bullpen was in the bottom five of the MLB this year in just about every big category you can think of, statistically possible.

Now the bullpen has actually gotten stronger since the start of the Winter Meetings. Chris Martin is now your set up guy.

Jansen is now your definitive closer for the next several seasons. Add into the fact that you have other arms in Schreiber, Joely Rodriguez, Matt Barnes and Houck; that’s pretty good.

The bottom line with Kenley Jansen signing with the Red Sox

This is a really good signing for a Sox team that needed some big time help in that bullpen. Jansen gives you a true closer for the first time since you had Craig Kimbrel.

dark. Next. Raffy Devers should be signed by now

Jansen is a great signing for this Red Sox team. But you need more! Go out and solidify the left side of your infield now. Better yet, why not go out and get a couple of rotation arms to make your starters that much deeper?

But one step at a time at this point of this off-season. The bullpen continues to get better, and Jansen solidifies the backend of it. Good job on this signing, Chaim. Keep ’em coming!
