The Boston Bruins take on the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Winter Classic, at Fenway Park on Monday. As the game takes place, the Bruins come in with a league best 28-4-4 record.

Losing two of the last three in a shootout, this is the perfect situation for a Bruins win. But this isn’t the only big Bruins headline. The other involves star right winger David Pastrnak.

The Bruins are currently in negotiations to get “Pasta” to sign with the organization long-term. There are signs that point to it getting done in general. But let’s face the facts, the Bruins need to get this David Pastrnak extension done sooner rather than later.

The Boston Bruins have their future captain in David Pastrnak

The Bruins have to face the horrible realization that Patrice Bergeron won’t be around much longer. So who should be the Bruins replacement to be their captain? David Pastrnak!

The Czech Republic born winger is a perfect candidate to take the next ‘C’ on his chest. We know about his ability to put the puck in the back of the net. But what we need to know is simply this: can he lead the post-Bergeron era Bruins to consistent playoff appearances and even a Stanley Cup?

Bruins coach Jim Montgomery is going to need someone to rely on for the connection between the players and coaching staff. Brad Marchand would be a good choice, but he gets suspended too much for that to be the case. That leaves Pastrnak as the logical choice.

David Pastrnak can’t be a Boston Bruins future opponent

Do we really want to see David Pastrnak come to the TD Garden as an opponent in the near future? I’ll answer that for everybody. NO!!

The Bruins don’t want to have to deal with David Pastrnak coming down on a breakaway and putting pucks past Linus Ullmark or Jeremy Swayman. That would be a nightmare!

Bruins fans don’t want to have to see Pastrnak go. It’d almost be like Joe Thornton or Ray Bourque leaving the organization. Legendary players that probably should’ve stayed a Bruin for the entirety of their careers.

So let’s not get to that point with Pastrnak, please?

The bottom line with David Pastrnak and the Boston Bruins

This extension needs to get done immediately. We already got word that a deal could be finalized very, very soon.

But will fans believe it until it actually is reported and happens? Answer: no they won’t.

Next. One last chance at the Cup in 2023 for B's!. dark

Bruins fans are going to enjoy the rest of this season, as it’s been so much fun to watch them be dominant. But rightfully so, they want Don Sweeney to do the right thing and extend their best player, heading into the future.

So keep enjoying what you’re seeing Boston Bruins fans. We all have seen stars in Boston, young and old, leave before. Who’s to say that it couldn’t happen again with the likes of David Pastrnak?

Get the deal done, Don. You’ve had a bad front office screw up recently. Don’t make it two bad ones in a given season. Extend ‘Pasta’!
