Well, it’s official. The 2022-2023 season is over for the New England Patriots. They finish the season with an 8-9 record after falling to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday afternoon, 35-23. The loss eliminates the Patriots from the playoffs for the second time in three seasons.

A lot of questions are going to be surrounding the Patriots organization, particularly with the coaching staff. What will happen with Matt Patricia? Will Bill O’Brien end up the OC in New England in 2023? Could Cam Achord be back as special teams coordinator?

Truthfully, the Patriots special teams were brutal to watch this season at times. The Buffalo season finale is a prime example as to why. So personally, I’m thinking the Patriots should part ways with Achord.

The New England Patriots gave up three kick-off return touchdowns under Cam Achord.

There were six total kick-off returns for touchdowns in the NFL this season. How many did the Patriots give up? Three. That’s right, THREE of the SIX kick-return touchdowns were given up by your New England Patriots.

Look at Sunday if you need anymore proof that the Patriots season was an absolute mess this season. They gave up two kick-off return touchdowns to the Bills on Sunday afternoon.

The first one was a doozy as it was the very first play of the entire game. Talk about giving a team all of the momentum with everything that happened this past week with safety Damar Hamlin!

But the fact that they let it happen more than once this season is alarming. Eventually, it comes down to coaching. Achord needs to be held accountable for everything that happened in that department. So how can you fix it?

Make Joe Judge the New England Patriots special teams coordinator in 2023

The extremely easy move here is to put Joe Judge back on special teams for this Patriots team.

Judge had been a part of the Patriots special teams coaching staff for eight straight seasons before taking the head coaching job with the New York Giants. We know he and Patricia were given the task of making the offense take a jump from 2021, which clearly didn’t happen.

So why not put Judge back where he’s comfortable? He’s a guy that had the special teams as a strength for this Patriots team. The unit was one of the best in the NFL and had only given up one kick-off return touchdown for a number of years before the 2020 season. The move to me makes too much sense, doesn’t it?

The bottom line with Cam Achord and the New England Patriots

Achord needs to go, end of story.

Gameday: Damien Harris a big X-factor vs Bills. dark. Next

There are plenty of other areas that need attention this off-season. So to me, this is a quick and easy fix to move on to other areas of concern.

If this isn’t addressed, then it will be a huge question mark heading into the next season. With so much uncertainty, make this one area better by getting rid of the guy that has seemingly made it much worse. Addition by subtraction, ladies and gentlemen!
