New England Patriots are in for a big offseason…so we hope

Before the New England Patriots make any free agent signings, trades or drafts anyone, head coach Bill Belichick MUST do something about his coaching staff. The Patriots could do everything right with free agents and the draft, but it won’t mean much if the players aren’t getting good instructions.

Decisions to change the coaching staff didn’t take long. Last week the Patriots announced they were in discussions to extend linebackers coach Jerod Mayo to keep him long term and they were actively interviewing for the offensive coordinator position.

That great news on both subjects. But that doesn’t guarantee that Mayo will stay, as he is getting calls to interview for head coach positions. And while the search for an offensive coordinator begins, it doesn’t mean the best choice will be made – to bring back Bill O’Brien.

Before dismantling the staff, Belichick and company get one last hurrah, as the Patriots and Atlanta Falcons coaching staffs will coach the East-West Shrine Bowl teams.

Whether these draft hopefuls get good coaching on offense, it will be on full display for the nation to see.
