NFL free agency is about a month away and it’s never too early to be looking at how to improve your favorite football team. Especially when your favorite football team is the New England Patriots!

The Patriots are entering a very important part of their off-season. The coaches have been selected to re-invent their woeful offense. Sure, we can talk about the offensive line all day long. But we also have to wonder about the wide receivers.

One wide receiver we have to wonder about is Nelson Agholor.

Agholor is scheduled to be a free agent this off-season. He spent the last two seasons with the Patriots, and put up okay numbers.

But if I were in the position of Bill Belichick, I would strongly advise not bringing Nelson Agholor back to the Patriots.

New England Patriots getting a better receiver than Nelson Agholor

There are better wide receivers that you can acquire, to replace Nelson Agholor’s spot on the Patriots.

One name that keeps coming up time and time again is Deandre Hopkins. “D-Hop” can come right into New England and be dynamic in this offense. The best part? He’s played under Bill O’Brien before. Sure, the relationship is sour. But imagine them putting aside their differences and helping this Patriots offense flourish?

Another name that has come up is Keenan Allen. Allen was a Pro-Bowl receiver with the Chargers for five straight seasons, from 2017-2021. It looks like the Chargers could realistically cut him to save money and create more cap space. Why wouldn’t you want a guy like that in your organization?

New England Patriots replacing Nelson Agholor’s mistakes

For as good as the 6’0, 198 pound receiver can be, he also has some really bad moments.

The downside with Agholor is his inability to produce in the game’s biggest moments.

One example that stands out is the Ravens game in week three this past season. The Patriots were driving, Mac Jones hits Agholor with a beautiful throw down the sideline; and Agholor fumbles.

He also caused a fumble for Bailey Zappe against the Lions.

Point being, he can’t be a part of a team that needs reliable players. Nelson Agholor is a good wide receiver, don’t get me wrong.

But $11 million to keep a guy that has a tendency to make a big mistake in a costly game? No thanks!

The bottom line with Nelson Agholor and the New England Patriots

This Patriots team can survive the 2023 season and beyond without Nelson Agholor suiting up for them.

Next. Why 2023 should bring more optimism for Pats fans. dark

They have a solid receiving core already with Kendrick Bourne, Tyquan Thornton and a (hopefully resigned!) Jakobi Meyers. Make another more or two and your receiving core will be that much better.

Plus, saving $11 million a year can help bring in other pieces. Maybe a safety? Maybe a tackle?

But if you are a true fan of Agholor here in New England, I wouldn’t be holding my breath as far as him coming back is concerned.

You can do better than that. This organization wants to do better. Thanks for two years, but it’s time to move on!
