When it comes to cornerbacks, it seems New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick either develops them as late round or undrafted rookie free agents or goes out and gets a top-level cornerback with some juice still left in their tank.

That’s why if the Los Angeles Rams either puts Jalen Ramsey on the trading block or outright cuts him, Belichick should go out and get him like he went out and got a lockdown corner like Darrelle Revis.

Although that was a free agent signing, Belichick historically doesn’t shy away from bringing in an elite corner he feels fits the scheme.  He went out and got Stephon Gilmore, which turned into gold for the Patriots.  For that one season in 2014, so did Revis.

As far as trades go, Aqib Talib jumps into recent memory.  Ramsey would jump right into that category and perhaps now is a good time in his career for him to play under a coach like Belichick.  He’s had the big contract, he won a Super Bowl, and perhaps he needs a change in scenery to take his career to yet another level.

If Jalen Ramsey is available, Patriots should be calling

With the Rams looking to shed some salary, a trade of Ramsey is the best approach.  Both the team and Ramsey have acknowledged as much.  And then there was this tweet from the star cornerback:

In responding to a Bleacher Report tweet, Ramsey put those release rumors to rest although a player is not in control of what a team decides.  But in saving just $600,000 in cap space in cutting Ramsey, that decision really wouldn’t do much so the best move for the Rams financially would be a trade.

Now, what should the Patriots give up getting a player like Ramsey?

Draft picks are always at play, but Belichick could add a player to that package.  Given how the season ended for rookie cornerback Jack Jones, a young corner with an upside could be of interest to a Rams team looking to shed salary and get younger.

With top cornerback Jonathan Jones hitting free agency, the Patriots currently have Jack Jones, Jonathan Jones, Marcus Jones, Jalen Mills and draft bust JoeJuan Williams in the mix.  Bringing in a top corner like Ramsey would change the game for Belichick as he would have a legit shutdown corner to go out against AFC East playmakers like Stefon Diggs and Jalen Waddle.

At 28 years old, Waddle is obviously still in his prime and would fit right into that Revis, Gilmore, Talib vibe as far as leadership on the field.  With the Patriots and under Belichick, Ramsey would have to just shut up and play.  That would be the most intriguing storyline if Belichick does go out there and get Ramsey.
