Boston Bruins steamroll Islanders: Frederic, Debrusk too much for NY
By Zachary McMahon
The Boston Bruins won against the New York Islanders, 6-2 on Saturday evening. The Boston Bruins extended their winning streak to three games after winning against the Dallas Stars and Nashville Predators in their previous two games.
The Islanders won their last against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday night 5-4, after two overtime losses against the Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens. The Bruins completed the season sweep of the Islanders and also have won the last four matchups dating back to March 2022.
Nick Foligno scored a goal and in an assist in the 1st period. Then, Pavel Zacha scored the last goal for the Bruins in the 2nd period while assisted by Charlie Coyle. But the icing on the cake is the Patrice Bergeron goal in the 2nd period, which was his 20th goal of the season, and it makes his 10th straight and 14th overall season with 20+ goals, which is the 2nd most 20+ goal season in Bruins history only two behind Bruins legend Johnny Bucyk who did it from 1957-1977.
Boston Bruins Player of the game: Trent Frederic
Bruins forward Trent Frederic scored two goals in the win against the Isles. The first goal was in the first period was the tip in from a Charlie McAvoy after a slap shot from McAvoy after a pass from Nick Foligno.
Then the 2nd goal was in the 2nd period, where Frederic shot a wrist shot past Islanders goaltender Semyon Varlamov after a turnover caused by AJ Greer.
This is the 3rd time that Frederic has scored multiple-goals in his career. Both games were this season against the Avalanche on December 3rd and the Kings on January 5th.
Frederic now has 13 goals, which is his career high and his first career season with double-digit goals.
Frederic is one of the more underated players on the Bruins as he’s on the 4th line with Foligno and Greer and he is one of the most improved players from last season.
Boston Bruins play of the game: DeBrusk comes back with a bang
Jake DeBrusk returned after missing 17 games due to a leg injury suffered at the Winter Classic against the Pittsburgh Penguins on January 2nd.
He scored on his first touch of the game, and it was a marvelous goal. This was DeBrusk’s 17th goal of the season and is only three away from his 2nd straight 20+ goal season. The goal was assisted by Brad Marchand with his 31st and David Pastrnak with his 36th. This was also Pastrnak’s 300th assist of his career.
Not only on his first touch, it was the first goal of the blowout for the Bruins, which you cannot script it better than this. The Bruins sure did miss him and they’re ready to hopefully go the rest of the season with a healthy DeBrusk.
The Bruins next game will be a President’s Day Matinee at TD Garden on Monday against the Ottawa Senators at a 1:00 puck drop on NESN. After that, the Bruins will be heading out to the Northwest for a four-game road trip starting with the Seattle Kraken on Thursday, February 23rd.
