Boston Bruins: Linus Ullmark sets Twitter ablaze with empty-net goal
By Zachary McMahon
You heard that right Boston Bruins goaltender Linus Ullmark scored a empty-netted goalie goal. That was late in the third period of the win against the Vancouver Canucks.
In the first period of the game, The Bruins scored their first two goals with Hampus Lindholm and Brad Marchand scoring for the B’s.
Also, Dmitry Orlov and Garnet Hathaway made their Bruins debut after being traded from the Washington Capitals on Thursday in a three-team trade involving the Minnesota Wild.
Boston Bruins get a goal from the most unlikeliness position
But the moment that defined this game is the Ullmark goalie goal.
Check this beauty out!!!
If you thought Jack Edwards was exciting before, his exuberance really shows on this goal.
Here’s Boston.com Bruins writer Connor Ryan’s first reaction to the goal.
Ullmark is the 13th goaltender to score a goal in the NHL, and is the 16th goal from a goaltender. This is the first time a Bruins goaltender has scored a goal ever, and it’s the first goalie goal since former Preds goaltender Pikka Rinne accomplished the feat in the win over the Chicago Blackhawks on January 9, 2020. Also, Ullmark is the 8th NHL goalie to shoot the puck directly into the net.
Although, this has not been the only time that the Bruins have seen a goalie goal. On December 8, 1987, Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Ron Hextall scored an empty netter goal against the Boston Bruins.
Hextall and Martin Brodeur are the only goaltenders to have two career goals, and both are the only ones to have done it in the playoffs. There has never been two goalie goals in the same season nor has there ever been multiple goals from a goal in the same season. Ullmark could make more history by scoring in the Stanley Cup playoffs that is coming up soon.
Along with this goal, Ullmark made 26 saves while only allowing one goal, and is the first goalie to have 30 wins this season in the NHL, as he’s the frontrunner for the Vezina trophy.
It’ll probably be a while until we see another goalie goal in the NHL, so let’s celebrate this moment as Bruins fans.
Meanwhile, the B’s will continue on their west coast road trip when they face the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night at 8:30 PM Eastern on NESN/NHL Network (for outside New England markets).
