Back on the first day of August last year, Christian Vázquez arrived in Houston with his (then) Boston Red Sox teammates. The team was coming off of a win and ready to take on the Houston Astros.

Moments before the game started, Vázquez was talking to the media when he was made aware that he had just been traded to the team across the diamond.

This trade left many confused, including Boston players themselves.

Vázquez was a key piece of the Boston Red Sox 2018 World Series squad

When Vázquez got to Houston, he served a role which consisted mostly of backing up catcher Martín Maldonado. He did however come in to pinch hit against his fellow team the next day, just to ground out to the second basemen Yolmer Sánchez.

In return for the World Series champion, Houston sent over infielder Enmanuel Valdez and outfielder Wilyer Abreu to the Boston Red Sox.

After being sent over, Valdez immediately started turning heads down in Worcester. He posted a .237 AVG while blasting seven homers with the WooSox in 44 games. Complimenting his offense, his defense got him noticed big time too.

Abreu on the other hand, posted a .242 batting average with the Sea Dogs in 40 games and had an OBP just under .400, sitting at .399.

Both players did enough to make this years spring training roster, however.

To begin Spring Training, manager Alex Cora said that he was “impressed” by the duo claiming they, “do damage in the strike zone.” So far through two spring training games, both players have had chances in both games to showcase their skills down in sunny Florida.

In his first at bat in this years Spring Training, Valdez cranked a nice looking two-run double into right center field.

In their game against Atlanta, Valdez had two at bats after coming off the bench. In his first at bat, he made nice contact with the ball sending a screamer to the Braves second basemen who made a nice catch to take away what would have been another solid hit for the young player.

So far this Spring Training, Abreu hasn’t been able to show his skills like he would like to, but it’s only been two games. There’s still plenty of time for. both of these players to really showcase their talent.

So did the Boston Red Sox win the Vázquez trade?

Well, the Sox got two young prospects who look like they’re going to pan out well and the Astros got a back catcher, who isn’t even on the team anymore. So you tell me (even though Houston got another ring).
