Patriots Rumors: Why re-signing Jonathan Jones is an important move
We’re off and running with another off-season of free agency. Monday began the legal tampering of free agency where teams can reach agreements with players. For the New England Patriots, it was a quiet day, but also an effective one.
It started with the trade of Jonnu Smith to the Atlanta Falcons in the mid-morning for a 2023 seventh round pick. Then it followed along with a very important re-signing: cornerback Jonathan Jones.
That’s right Pats fans! Jonathan Jones is back in New England for two more seasons. The corner has agreed to a two year deal with the Patriots for $19 million.
If you’re a Patriots fan, you should be ecstatic about this signing!
New England Patriots keeping their No.1 corner in Jonathan Jones
We weren’t sure what direction the Patriots were going to go for corner this off-season. There was speculation about Jalen Ramsey for a hot second. But he ended up with division rival Miami.
Now we know that the former Auburn Tiger is staying put in New England, we don’t have to worry about who will be covering the top receivers for the Patriots in 2023.
The 5-foot-10 Jones was very dependable for the Patriots last season. He played in 16 out of 17 games and finished with four interceptions, tied for a team high. He also blocked a punt against the Colts that turned into a blocked punt returned for a touchdown.
Jonathan Jones can do a lot of things for the Patriots. Now we know who is going to get the nod against receivers like Stefon Diggs, Tyreek Hill, and others.
New England Patriots getting a financial steal in Jonathan Jones
With the way the NFL is currently run and the salary cap continuously increasing, I don’t know if it would’ve shocked anyone if Jones got a massive overpay from somebody. That makes this deal so much better.

Jones is only getting $20 million for the two year deal. The better part is that only $13 million of is guaranteed.
So say the Patriots wanted to get rid of Jones in 2024, it would be an easy cut or potential trade.
With the Patriots having other needs at tackle, wide receiver, and now potentially safety with Devin McCourty retiring; this was a good job by Bill Belichick here.
The Patriots wanted to keep Jonathan Jones around and he wanted to stay here. The job got done and I personally couldn’t be happier about it. But that’s not the only move that needs to be done to consider this a great free agency period.
The defense could use another corner, assuming a guy like Jalen Mills would move back over to safety. If you like the defense the way it is, then go out and sign tackles. Trade for that big time receiver that we’ve been waiting for since the end of the regular season. Do more!
But Jonathan Jones is a great start to this free agency period for the Patriots. I’m excited to see what the next two years holds for the 29 year old corner in New England!
