The New England Patriots had a pretty successful first day of the NFL free agency tampering period.

They were able to get rid of the contract of Jonnu Smith with the trade to the Atlanta Falcons. Jonathan Jones was brought back on a team-friendly two year contract.

But on day two, they took a massive hit in a position room that a lot consider weak to begin with!

Jakobi Meyers is now no longer a member of the New England Patriots. He signed a three year, $33 million contract with the Las Vegas Raiders on Tuesday morning. The deal also includes $21 million guaranteed.

Now that the deal is agreed upon and there has been some time to process it, here’s what it means for the New England Patriots.

New England Patriots having a move for wide receiver (hopefully) coming

This Patriots team cannot rely on simply having Devante Parker, Kendrick Bourne, and Tyquan Thornton in the wide receiver room. Can’t happen!

That’s why I think a move is inevitably coming. Who that move will transpire into? That remains to be seen. But the good news is: there’s options.

The biggest option, in my opinion, is Deandre Hopkins from the Arizona Cardinals. Yes, there is the past bad blood between Hopkins and Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien. But remember, Hopkins has a lot of love for Bill Belichick and vice versa. Maybe that could be enough to get the star wide receiver to Foxborough.

The Denver Broncos could be looking to get rid of either Jerry Jeudy or Courtland Sutton. Not bad options at number one receiver if you’re a Patriots fan! They both can give you speed and separation that this offense needs. Plus, Mac Jones needs a new number one target now that Meyers is in Las Vegas.

The other option that could come into fruition is Brandin Cooks. He’s looking to get out of Houston. The Patriots are familiar with Cooks as he played with the team in 2017. He could be a great addition to this offense as he can put up numbers for an offense that desperately needs some new life.

There’s options here and the Patriots can go out and make one of these happen. The only question is: how aggressive will the Patriots be here?

New England Patriots not wanting to pay Jakobi Meyers

The contract is the most puzzling part about Meyers’ departure to the Raiders. It was an affordable contract for this Patriots team.

It’s very clear this Patriots team didn’t want to give the former NC State receiver the money that he was looking for. But the confusing part is that they gave Nelson Agholor a two for $22 million contract back in 2021. So why wouldn’t they give that contract to a receiver who earned it?

Short answer, they didn’t want to pay. So Josh McDaniels and Vegas swooped in and snatched a good player away from the Patriots. That’s the business. Now the Pats are looking at being in the basement of the AFC East because of not securing their talent, like Meyers.

It’s only the second day of free agency, let’s be clear there. Plenty of time left this off-season. But it’s time to be aggressive!

Next. Retaining Jonathan Jones an important move. dark

Get a number one receiver and a nice complimentary receiver! Whether one is in free agency and one in the draft, both in free agency, or both in the draft; something needs to happen.

Losing Jakobi Meyers is a tough reality to swallow. So now the question looms: how will the Patriots respond?
