The New England Patriots are never dull for certain and it’s one of the most alluring aspects of this franchise for any current or prospective fan. There is never a quiet day emanating from Foxborough and ain’t it grand.

Lately, the most interesting and captivating story concerns third-year quarterback to be Mac Jones. All the Mac Jones talk has been clogging the airwaves from Boston to San Diego and it continues.

It revolves around stories related to the 2022 season, one which Jones, his head coach, Bill Belichick, and hoards of others in the Patriots orbit would like to forget.

But forgetting isn’t about to happen it seems very soon, if at all. The reverberations continue and the vibes are anything but positive.

New England Patriots are in something of a turmoil

The New England Patriots 2022 season was a wreck. Finishing 8-9 and only one game (and one play) away from a second straight playoff berth went off the rails in a hurry.

The wreck emanated from the seemingly bizarre hiring by the Belichick of two basically unqualified former NFL head coaches, Matt Patricia and Joe Judge to run the Patriots’ offense in 2022. Friends of Bill, you know.

Well, to be succinct, that proved to be a disastrous decision for Belichick, the two coaches, and the team. It failed miserably. But the fallout continues.

Recent press revelations that Belichick has been shopping Jones, the former No. One pick around the league has been floated, then trashed, but has now been given more credence.

As the old adage says, “where’s there’s smoke there’s fire” usually but not always proves accurate in sports and in other prominent aspects of modern life.

In this case, the guess here is that there’s real fire under this rumor. So why would that be the case? Jones had a superb rookie season for the team in 2021 leading the Patriots to the playoffs.

The future looked bright. Then came the Patricia etc. appointments and everything seemed to fall to ruin after that. The coaching decisions flopped as many observers suspected. Coincidentally, Jones reacted predictably. He was ticked off and demonstrated the same.

Then, he committed what one might call a “cardinal sin” against the totally insular to a fault New England Patriots football organization. Jones went outside the Belichick house for advice on how to rectify the dysfunction in the Patriots’ offense.

New England Patriots insular modus operandi can’t be challenged

Now, for any Patriot player to go outside the operation for football advice is anathema. Indeed, it is a cardinal sin of the highest magnitude. Ya just don’t do it, ya know!

In addition, to go outside the cloister to the college operation, Alabama, with which Coach Belichick is probably the closest, and think it won’t get back to Belichick staggers the imagination.

If Jones thought that, well, he is at best, naive. It, of course, did get back to Belichick who evidently isn’t at all happy about it. So the thought here is this.

The Mac Jones controversy or whatever else one might term it is real. It’s serious and it may very well wind up with Jones being shipped out of town soon, whatever the football ramifications. Look to the 2023 NFL draft to see if his successor may be drafted.

Jones has violated a rule that for the uber-insular New England Patriots organizations is borderline unforgivable. He went outside Gillette Stadium for something football-related.

The guess here is that Jones’ tenure in New England may end soon. One thing is certain, however, unless and until Jones is forgiven (whatever the coaching situation was in 2022, it’s irrelevant in this issue) he’s gone.

Next. How New England Patriots can become a contender again. dark

Jones violated the ultimate edict, and along with the other aspects not in his favor, e.g his poor 2022 performance, Jones’ tenure in New England may very well end before or during the NFL draft in late April.

As long as Belichick is in charge of the New England Patriots (and wishy-washy Robert Kraft does not step in and direct), Jones is on thin ice.

The weather outside is heating up. The supposition here is that Jones will be dealt and the team will move on. It’s just a guess. We’ll see what eventuates.
