Celtics soar by Hawks in Game 1: Tatum & Brown spark dominant run
By Zachary McMahon
The Boston Celtics won Game 1 against the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday Afternoon 112-99 in Game 1 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Since the Celtics are at the No. 2 seed they faced the winner of the 7/8 game in the NBA play-in tournament. The Hawks won against the Miami Heat in that game which made them the No. 7 seed.
The C’s swept the Hawks 3-0 during the regular season including the last game of the regular season.
Despite being healthy for this game, Robert Williams III was on the bench for this game where he scored 12 in the win. Horford started at center while Tatum started at small forward, and Derrick White started at shooting guard.
Boston Celtics held off Hawks comeback attempt
The Celtics had potentially another 4th quarter choke which is a problem that has plagued them all season. Boston led by as much as 32 in the game but the Hawks put on a 32-12 run to bring it down to 12 with about nine minutes left in the 4th quarter. Then when it was 110-87 the Hawks would go on to a 10-0 run which ended with a Marcus Smart block to De’Andre Hunter
Despite being outscored by the Hawks in the 2nd half, the C’s were able to hold on to Game 1. The Hawks were held to less than 100 points only the third time this season and the first time since December 7 loss against the New York Knicks.
This should not be the game formula if Boston wants to win games in the later rounds of the playoffs so that they could go back to the NBA Finals.
Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum notch double-doubles for Boston Celtics
Jaylen Brown scored 29 rebounds and grabbed 12 rebounds for the double-double. Jayson Tatum scored 25 points and snatched 11 rebounds in the game.
Time and time again the duo of Brown and Tatum soared through the Hawks’ defense as they helped the C’s held on to win Game 1. This was the first time since the 2020 Bubble postseason that they had double-doubles together in the same Postseason game.
The Celtics will play Game 2 on Tuesday at 7 pm on ESPN/NBC Sports Boston.
