Red Sox News: Nick Pivetta has been a bright spot in starting rotation
The Boston Red Sox are currently sitting at 8-9 so far through 17 games of the 2023 regular season. Safe to say, the starting pitching has not been kind to Red Sox fans through April.
Chris Sale has struggled mightily in his first three starts. Corey Kluber hasn’t been that impressive to start his Red Sox campaign. Guys like Garrett Whitlock and Brayan Bello need more time for evaluations because of their early season injuries. But one guy that has been a surprise to start 2023 has been Nick Pivetta.
In his fourth overall season with the Red Sox, Pivetta was looked upon to provide some stability and give quality innings for this team. So far, the 6-foot-5 right hander has held up his end of the bargain.
Boston Red Sox getting a strikeout pitcher so far in Nick Pivetta
It has only been a small sample size so far (two starts), but the results so far have been extremely pleasant for Nick Pivetta. Especially with the strikeouts!
In 14 innings pitched so far this season, Pivetta has 16 strikeouts. If you do quick math on that, that’s a little more than one strikeout per inning. That’s a very good sign for Red Sox pitchers and the team as a whole.
Watching Pivetta’s starts, the big thing has been his location on all of his pitches. Fastball, curveball, you name it; he’s throwing them for strikes and hitting his spots. Plus, it allow for the defense to have less chances at making errors behind him.
Boston Red Sox getting quality starts from Nick Pivetta
Besides the strikeouts, the great thing about the 30 year old starter is that he’s giving the Red Sox quality starts. That means more than you may initially think!

The Red Sox have gotten two starts of five innings each from the right-handed starter. He did only pitch four innings against the Angels the other day. But that was because of one bad first inning! The ERA is at 4.50, but again; one bad inning in his last start hurt him.
So the good thing is that Pivetta is being the “stopper” that teams want as they go through the grind of the 162 game season. A guy that can pitch well enough to give your team a chance to win every fifth day. Pivetta is doing a great job of that thus far!
The bottom line with the Boston Red Sox and Nick Pivetta
I’m hoping that this is the beginning of a really quality season from Nick Pivetta. But the problem is that we’ve seen glimpses of this from him before in his ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ ways.
Now, if we can get this from Pivetta more often than not; then we as Red Sox fans will have something to cheer for this season. The offense can’t do it every single night. Which is why the pitching staff needs to keep up their end of the bargain.
Get the game over to your 7-8-9 of John Schreiber, Chris Martin, and Kenley Jansen to win baseball games. Plain and simple!
So far, from Nick Pivetta; I’m liking what I’m seeing…even if he doesn’t love the pitch clock!
